The Smuggler's Retreat

Sit back on the deck, feel the coastal breeze, and take in sweeping views of the Little River. From this leafy perch, you’ll enjoy rare privacy surrounded by woods on three sides—your own peaceful retreat with water just beyond the trees.

This charming two-bedroom cottage is perfectly positioned for both relaxation and exploration. Inside, an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area creates a bright, welcoming space to gather. The fully stocked kitchen has everything you need to cook with ease, from pots and pans to a drip coffee maker for slow Maine mornings. A cozy gas fireplace adds instant warmth and ambiance at the flip of a switch.

Upstairs, you’ll find two comfortable bedrooms (one queen, one full) and a full bath. Step out onto the spacious second-floor deck—ideal for grilling, dining, reading, or simply listening to the wind in the trees and birdsong all around you. In the evening, watch the sun set over Glen Cove and the Little River.

Downstairs, a spiral staircase leads to a large second living area with a brand-new full-size sleeper sofa, an additional bathroom, and a walkout to the outdoors—perfect for extra guests or a bit more space to unwind.

What’s included
Fresh linens and a full set of towels are provided for each guest. There’s also a washer and dryer on-site for your convenience. To help you settle in, a starter kit includes essentials like shampoo, conditioner, paper towels, soaps, trash bags, and more—everything you need for your first night or two.

Step outside and explore
From the cottage, access a scenic two-mile loop leading to the open ocean. Along the way, take in views of the Damariscotta River, Cuckold Lighthouse, and nearby islands. Head left for an easy evening stroll along the river’s edge until it meets the crashing surf. Breathe in the mix of salty air and pine—it’s pure coastal Maine.

The neighborhood
A true haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers, this area offers quiet beauty in every direction. Walk the nearby Land Trust trails to the East Boothbay General Store, or continue on into town.

Glen Cove is perfect for kayaking and canoeing, with hidden coves, winding inlets, and abundant wildlife—seals, seabirds, and more. Paddle over a historic shipwreck, take a guided tour, or simply drift and watch the sky turn brilliant shades of orange and pink at sunset.

  The house was in a great location. It is situated on a beautiful, quiet 2-mile loop that has gorgeous views of the water. The loop is excellent for walking/running. Also, it is close to Boothbay Harbor and other fun towns. The house does not have AC so my warmer-blooded sister and nieces were warm at times. Also, the house description states that it has 2 queen beds but actually it is 1 queen bed and 1 full bed. The living area downstairs is a great place for kids to play, and it stays cool. However, the utility closet, which contains the heating unit, water, etc., is really loud at all times of the night, so the sofa bed downstairs really isn't a good place to sleep unless you can sleep through anything, or like I did, wear a sleep mask and earbuds.
  Overall, the house is a great place to stay if you are in the area. I think our group of 6 was probably too many, considering the couch downstairs was hard to sleep on, and the 1 bed is a full-size bed. Also, the couch upstairs is very small, so unless you are a child, I would think it would be very hard to sleep on. I think it is more suitable for 4 people, but we had a great time and made it work. Honestly, the location made up for a lot and it was a good price for what it was.

  We had a great stay in Boothbay. The rental property was nestled in the woods. We saw wild turkey, ducks, and osprey from the house. The house was comfortable, very clean, well equipped, and beautifully decorated. It was exactly as described. Our questions were addressed promptly by text.

  The home was such a cozy home away from home. We mostly used the upstairs and deck. The property was as described and more! There were so many hidden gems to read, hand made ceramics to mix salads in, and even toys for young kids! We could tell this home has facilitated many memories.

  Smugglers retreat was a great place to enjoy after touring boothbay. The most wonderful part was the deck where we could relax. The neighbor hood was quiet and restful. Bathrooms and kitchens were very clean and nice And contacts with coastal Maine vacations was so easy It was quite easy to get downtown to boothbay for lobster and touring

  We had a wonderful stay at the Smugglers Retreat. The house was clean and perfect for our family of 6. The kids loved the spiral staircase!
  The area around the house was calm and quiet. We enjoyed many walks around Samoset Trail and across the little dam. The landscape is beautiful!
  The deck is perfect for meals and the large sliding doors add so much more light and air flow.
